Produced to co-incide with the artist's solo exhibtion of the same name, "I borrowed optimism from the past" marks a turning point in Sonja Gangl's career. The Austrian artist is best known for her rigorous investigations of the medium of drawing, but here presents a new series of large-format paintings for the first time. Gangl hereby takes the step from figurative representation into the field of abstraction, referring conceptually to the optimistic outlook of American Abstract Expressionism in the 1960s.

The publication includes texts by: Sandro Droschl (KM- Graz), Jana Franze (KM- Graz), Peter Geimer (Free University of Berlin), Elsy Lahner (Albertina Vienna).
